New Jersey is named after the island of Jersey in the English Channel. It is
bordered on the north by New York, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, on the southwest
by Delaware, and on the west by Pennsylvania. Parts of New Jersey lie within the
metropolitan areas of New York and Philadelphia.
New Jersey has a temperate climate, with warm to hot humid summers and cool to cold
winters. New Jersey is the eleventh-most populous state, but the most densely populated.
New Jersey is infamous for its abundance of oil refineries. Atlantic City is a
city famous for its gambling casinos and boardwalk. It was the home of the Miss
America Pageant from 1921 to 2005.
New Jersey has a domestic partership law which is available to both
homosexual and heterosexual couples.
