South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union to
found the Confederate States of America. The center of population of South Carolina
is located in Richland County, in the city of Columbia.
The capital and largest city in the state is Columbia. The other two major centers
in the state are Charleston in the Lowcountry and Greenville in the Upstate.
Beaufort and Georgetown have been significant historical centers
and now are smaller communities with a focus on local service and tourism.
