Washington D.C. is the capital city of the United States
of America. The city is named after George Washington, military leader of
the American Revolution and the first President of the United States. It
is commonly known as D.C., The District, or simply Washington.
Washington is surrounded by the states of Maryland and Virginia. Washington
is home to numerous national landmarks and is one of the most popular tourist
destinations in the United States. The world famous Smithsonian Institution
here as well as the White House and the United States Capitol buildings. There
are many art museums including the National Gallery of Art.
Washington is a major national center for the arts. The John F. Kennedy Center
for the Performing Arts hosts the National Symphony Orchestra, the Washington
National Opera, the Washington Ballet, and a variety of other musical and
stage performances.
Washington, D.C., has recognized domestic partnerships since 1992. Domestic
partnership in the District is open to both same-sex and opposite-sex couples.
The sodomy law was repealed completely in 1995.
